and Why They Matter

For many families in our community, the cost of education is one of the biggest worries they face. Parents want their children to have every opportunity, but rising tuition at four-year colleges and universities can make that dream feel far out of reach.

Community college offers a real, practical answer to that problem—and it does so without sacrificing quality or ambition. As a candidate for Oakland Community College Trustee, I believe we need to talk openly about the cost savings community colleges provide and why those savings matter so much for our future.

A Smarter Financial Start

When students choose to begin their education at a community college, they are often cutting their tuition costs by thousands of dollars per year. General education classes—such as English, math, science, and social sciences—can be taken at a fraction of the cost they might pay elsewhere.

That means:

  • Less student loan debt.

  • More flexibility to explore different majors.

  • The ability to work part-time or support family without being overwhelmed by bills.

For many students, this can be the difference between attending college and giving up on that goal entirely.

Saving Money Without Lowering Expectations

Cost savings sometimes raise a concern: if it’s cheaper, is it “less than”? The answer, when it comes to community college, is no.

Students can receive excellent instruction from dedicated faculty, gain hands-on experience, and build strong academic foundations. Many community colleges have transfer agreements with four-year institutions, allowing students to move forward smoothly once they are ready.

Community college students are not choosing a lesser path. They are choosing a smarter financial path—one that protects their future options instead of burdening them with early debt.

Supporting Working Families and Adult Learners

The cost of education does not just affect recent high school graduates. It affects working parents, adults retraining for new careers, and people going back to finish a degree they started years ago.

Community colleges make it possible for these students to:

  • Take classes part-time while continuing to work.

  • Pay affordable tuition instead of taking on heavy loans.

  • Access financial aid, scholarships, and payment plans that fit their lives.

These cost savings are not just numbers on a page. They are:

  • Groceries on the table.

  • Rent paid on time.

  • Childcare that remains within reach.

When we ease the financial burden of education, we support families as a whole.

Strengthening Our Community’s Financial Health

Lower-cost education doesn’t just help individual students; it helps our whole community. Graduates who carry less debt are more able to:

  • Buy homes.

  • Start businesses.

  • Invest in their neighborhoods.

  • Give back through service and leadership.

In other words, the cost savings of community college spread outward. They create more stability, more opportunity, and more room for growth across our city and region.

The Role of the Trustee

As a trustee, I will keep the issue of affordability at the center of every decision. That means:

  • Protecting and expanding financial aid awareness so more students know what help is available.

  • Supporting programs that keep textbooks, fees, and other costs as low as possible.

  • Advocating for responsible budgeting that keeps tuition fair and predictable.

  • Listening to students and families when they tell us what they are struggling with financially.

Our goal should never be just to enroll students. Our goal must be to make sure they can afford to stay, succeed, and graduate.

A Vision for Accessible Education

Friends to Elect MiVida Burrus is built on the belief that education should open doors, not close them. Community colleges are one of the strongest tools we have to make that belief real—especially when it comes to cost.

By keeping tuition low, offering flexible options, and providing clear pathways to careers and four-year degrees, community colleges help students protect their financial futures while still dreaming big.

I am running for Oakland Community College Trustee because I want every student in our community to know: college can be within reach. You deserve high-quality education that respects your hard work, your budget, and your goals.

When we invest in affordable community college education, we are not just saving money. We are investing in people—and that is the wisest investment we can make.
