Why Community Colleges Are Essential to Our Community's Future

When we talk about building a stronger future for our community, we often mention jobs, safety, housing, and opportunity. At the heart of all of these is education—and community colleges play one of the most important roles in that story.
Community colleges are where education meets real life. They welcome students of all ages, stages, and backgrounds. They adapt to local needs, from healthcare to technology to skilled trades. They open doors for people who might otherwise be left out of higher education entirely.
As a candidate for Oakland Community College Trustee, I see community colleges not as an afterthought, but as a cornerstone of our shared future.
Opening Doors for Everyone
Unlike many other institutions, community colleges are built on the promise of access. That access shows up in many ways:
Open admissions that give more students a chance to enroll.
Lower tuition that makes education possible for working families.
Flexible scheduling for people balancing work, childcare, and other responsibilities.
Programs for recent high school graduates, returning adults, and lifelong learners.
This kind of open, welcoming structure is not just nice to have—it is essential. It means that talent is not wasted just because someone cannot afford a different path or did not follow a “traditional” timeline. It means our community benefits from the skills and contributions of people who may have been overlooked elsewhere.
Fueling the Local Economy
Community colleges are directly tied to our local economy. They train nurses, technicians, educators, small business owners, and more. They work with local employers to design programs that match real job needs, so that students graduate ready to step into careers.
Every time a student completes a certificate, earns a degree, or picks up new skills in a short-term program, our economy grows stronger. Local businesses gain a more prepared workforce. Families gain stability. Neighborhoods gain role models.
By investing in our community college, we are investing in:
Higher employment and better-paying jobs.
Stronger local businesses and new small enterprises.
A workforce that can adapt as industries and technologies change.
Advancing Equity and Opportunity
We cannot talk about education without talking about equity. For many students of color, first-generation college students, and low-income families, community colleges are often the most realistic and welcoming entry point to higher education.
That makes the work of a trustee deeply important. It is about more than budgets and policies—it is about asking hard questions:
Are we reaching the students who need us most?
Are our support services strong enough to help students stay enrolled and succeed?
Are we removing barriers, not adding them?
Community colleges can be powerful tools for closing opportunity gaps. But that only happens when we lead with intention, transparency, and a clear commitment to fairness.
Connecting Campus and Community
A strong community college is not isolated from the people around it. It should feel like a true community hub—hosting events, supporting local organizations, and partnering with schools, nonprofits, and faith communities.
When campuses open their doors to the broader community, everyone benefits:
High school students can see themselves in college classrooms.
Families can learn about financial aid, career options, and support services.
Local organizations can team up with the college to offer workshops, clinics, and more.
This kind of connection builds trust. It reminds people that the college belongs to them, too.
A Promise We Must Keep
I am running for Oakland Community College Trustee because I believe in the promise that community colleges represent:
A promise that no one is turned away from learning because of their background or bank account.
A promise that education will stay rooted in the real needs of our community.
A promise that students will be supported, not just enrolled.
Our community deserves a college that lives up to those promises every single day. With thoughtful leadership, clear communication, and a deep commitment to students, we can make that a reality.
Friends to Elect MiVida Burrus is about more than a campaign. It is about lifting up the role of community college as a powerful force for change. Together, we can ensure that our college remains a pathway to opportunity, a driver of equity, and a proud reflection of the community it serves.
